SFK Pulp increasing green energy output in Quebec By winning the tender call issued by Hydro-Quebec for the purchase of power co-generated by biomass, SFK Pulp Fund will be increasing its green energy production capacity at the Saint-Felicien mill from 33 to 42. 5 MW/yr or nearly 30%. Because the mill is already self-sufficient in terms of electrical power, this additional 9. 5 MW of power generation will be entirely sold to Hydro-Quebec Distribution.

Cascades’ kraft papers now FSC certified Cascades East Angus has recently received the FSC certification from the Forest Stewardship Council for the majority of its unbleached kraft paper products. Both the FSC Recycled and FSC Mixed Sources certifications have been granted to the different kraft grades aimed at the conversion of industrial and food packaging, as well as building materials and envelopes.

ÅF and EARTH University team up for banana paper
project

In December, EARTH University and ÅF agreed upon the joint efforts in optimizing the University’s own paper machine for banana paper production at the University grounds in Costa Rica. The vast and unique expertise of different pulp and paper making processes within ÅF worldwide was hereby acknowledged and appreciated once again. The Banana Paper Project underwent a number of significant changes and adjustments in the production plant in 2008 and ÅF’s current task is to map the path forward, ensuring both manageable and timely correct processes in order to successfully manufacture paper with discarded stalks of the banana plant and recycled office paper for commercial purposes.

Stora Enso signs United Nations CEO Water Mandate Stora Enso has signed the United Nations Global Compact CEO Water Mandate, making Stora Enso the first paper and packaging company to endorse this initiative. The CEO Water Mandate is an initiative that encourages businesses and industry to create and realize sustainable water strategies.

CEPI selects Shiro Echo paper by Favini for its sustainability report CEPI has printed its fourth Sustainability Report on Shiro Echo, a paper made with recycled pulps and certified FSC mixed sources, part of Favini’s breakthrough range of environmentally friendly papers. CEPI’s new Sustainability Report highlights the sustainability performance of the European paper industry which, for example, has reduced emissions of CO2 by 42% per tonne since 1990.

Appleton to appeal ruling on Fox River cleanup in Wisconsin A court fight over funding a paper-industry cleanup of PCB contamination in the Fox River rekindled when one company disclosed plans to appeal a judge’s recent ruling and another moved to reassert its own legal claims. Michael Hermes, an attorney for papermaker Appleton, said the company will appeal US District Judge William Griesbach’s ruling December 16 to dismiss a claim by the company and NCR Corporation for cleanup contributions from several other parties.

IPCC recommendations push

European forest-based industries are urging COP15 delegates to consider IPCC recommendations in climate change agreement The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says it recognizes the significant potential of forests in mitigating climate change. In its 4th Assessment Report, the IPCC concludes: “A sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fiber or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained mitigation benefit”. Nippon Paper mill selected to Washington biomass
initiative

According to the Peninsula Daily News, the Nippon Paper Industries USA paper mill in Port Angeles, WA, is one of the first four companies selected to partner with the state Department of Natural Resources in renewable energy projects using biomass from state forestlands. Public Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark announced the partnership the same day that the federal government announced in an unrelated development that a Sequim Bay research laboratory will share in a grant to develop biofuels.
