Glatfelter to acquire airlaid nonwovens manufacturer Concert Industries Glatfelter announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to purchase Concert Industries from Brookfield Special Situations Management Limited, an affiliate of Brookfield Asset Management Inc. for Canadian $246.5 million (US$235 million). Approximately 80% of Concert’s sales come from the feminine hygiene market, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 5% for the next four years.

Nanjing hualun Junze paper plans to build a greenfield
newsprint mill in China, despite growing overcapacity concerns in the
industry there.

The firm called for tenders for a PM and a deinked pulp line last month,
following the all-clear from the authorities to go ahead with the
RMB 1.88 billion ($275 million) investment. The machine is
planned to have a width of 6. 3 m, a design speed of
2,000 m/min and a capacity of 200,000 tonnes/yr.
Construction work is expected to kick off at
the site in the Nanjing Economic and Techno-
logical Development Zone, in Nanjing city,
the capital of Jiangsu province, during the
first quarter of 2010. Startup is slated in
the second half of 2011.

A new company, empire tissue, plans a 70,000-ton/yr
recycled tissue paper machine in the Village of Solvay, NY, and is seek-
ing state funding for the project.
Empire Tissue is looking at a 67-acre property owned by Honeywell In-
ternational, according to the Post-Standard in Syracuse. The company’s
production would focus on towel and napkin end products.
Also in New York this year, Irving Paper is working on a new tissue
paper machine at its mill in Fort Edward and SCA plans upgrades at its
South Glens Falls mill.
Europe’s latest and one of the world’s most advanced recycled paper
mills will be built in Britain, following the decision by Spanish paper
and packaging group saICa to press ahead with construction of the
£290 million development at Partington Wharfside, in Trafford, near
Manchester. Up to 200 new jobs will be created directly and indirectly
at the plant when it is established. Site clearance works at the chosen
site had started in 2009, the paper mill construction is expected to com-
mence early in 2010 and the startup is expected in February 2012.
