Nordea confirmed it is evaluating whether to provide financing for the
project but insisted that no concrete decision has been made, contrary
to some media reports.

The company added that environmental factors would be taken into account if it were to fund the scheme. The blueprint calls for a 1.1-million tonne/yr plant producing bleached hardwood and softwood kraft market pulp. Gunns has been seeking financial backers for the A$2.2 billion ($2 billion) project after Australian bank ANZ pulled out as lead financier in 2008, following anti-mill campaigns and protests from several green groups. Late last year Södra and other unnamed parties were revealed to be in negotiations with Gunns, as potential joint venture (jv) partners for the project.

CmpC’s Celulose riograndense plans forest investments
Empresas CMPC’s Brazilian subsidiary CMPC Celulose Riogran-
dense (formerly Fibria’s Guaíba pulp mill), located in Rio Grande
do Sul state, southern Brazil, plans to resume forest invest-
ments in the country from in March to further support its capac-
ity expansion project. This comprises an increase of bleached
eucalyptus kraft (BEK) pulp production from 450,0000 tonnes/yr
to 1. 7 million tonnes/yr.
In this context, the company aims to invest in seedlings as
well as in the plantation of 15,000 ha of eucalyptus trees. Also,
Celulose Riograndense will recover 18,000 ha of natural forests.
In a statement, the company informed that the timeframe of its
pulp expansion project will depend on pulp prices worldwide
and the currency exchange trend. The more feasible date for the
greenfield pulp mill startup is 2014-2015.

Cascades East Angus, QC, has recently received the FSC certification from the Forest Stewardship Council for the majority of its unbleached kraft paper products. Both the FSC Recycled and FSC Mixed Sources certifications have been granted to the different kraft grades aimed for the conversion of industrial and food packaging, as well as building materials and envelopes.

slovenian paper producers The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) announced that as of January 2010 the Paper and Paper Converting Industry Association of Slovenia has become its newest associate member. The Slovenian association gathers seven paper and board producers and many other paper and board converters. Together they produce 1,123,859 tonnes/yr of paper, board and other converted paper products.

Celulose riograndense Empresas CMPC’s new subsidiary reached a record output of 60,502 tonnes of uncoated woodfree paper in 2009, up 3.8% from 2008. The mill, located in southern Brazil, was acquired from Fibria in September 2009.

Blue heron paper

Newsprint and tissue producer Blue Heron Paper announced it has filed for bankruptcy protection in Portland, OR, to reorganize and restructure the company. The mill in Oregon City has total capacity of 244,000 tons/yr of mostly recycled content newsprint, groundwood papers and tissue.

Carrascal

Fabrica de Papeles Carrascal’s auction was conducted on Jan. 12, in Santiago, Chile. The company, controlled by the Canadian Toronto Trust fund, ceased operations last year due to economic problems. Located in Quinta Normal city, Papeles Carrascal will be bought entirely. The company has a production capacity of 46,000 tonnes/yr of recycled linerboard, corrugating medium and testliner paper.

ahlstrom

Ahlstrom has concluded the cooperation procedure on a possible closure of a paper machine for filtration materials at its manufacturing plant in Barcelona, Spain. As a result of the negotiations, Ahlstrom has made the decision to close down the paper machine.
